Kou Joseph Hiraga is a character in Vatican Miracle Examiner.

Kou is a young, Japanese Catholic priest. Though he's a pious Catholic and a talented scientist, he seeks to find "miracles" that cannot be explained by science. To accomplish this, he begins to assume the position of miracle examiner. His partner is Roberto Nicholas.[1]

Appearance[]

Hiraga is described as having jet black hair, pale skin, almond shaped eyes and full lips. He is quite short and has a petite frame. According to the novels, he has dark eyebags from lack of sleep. He pays little attention to his appearance, and wear white gloves and is almost always seen in his cassock, but he has no problem stepping out in his pajamas as well.

Personality and Interests[]

Hiraga is a kind, warm hearted person with a strong and unwavering faith. He always sees the good in people, to a dangerous degree: he's very trusting and believes every person he meets is moved only by kindness and good intentions, because he himself is like that. Despite his strong Catholic faith, he's very open minded and accepting.

He is very straight forward and a bit blunt, and often has a hard time understanding jokes or sarcasm. He's very stubborn at times and can get wrapped up in experiments and projects for hours on end, damaging his own health in the process. He often has to be reminded to eat or sleep by Roberto, who also takes care of the housework and cooks for him, as Hiraga is incapable of doing either.

He specializes in scientific investigation (with his main areas of expertise being biology and physics), and always carries his equipment around. He often aids the police in their investigations, helping out with autopsies, but he prefers working alone, as his methods can be unconventional (i.e. licking unknown substances).

His favorite pastimes are doing science experiments, collecting bugs and playing the Game of Angels and Demons with Lauren, a complicated board game, similar to Go, which he invented.

He can speak English, German, Italian, Latin and Japanese, but he's not very confident in his Japanese skills.

Background[]

This section contains spoilers.

Hiraga was born to Ada, a Japanese-American primatologist, and Jin, a Japanese musician. He was born in America and shortly after moved to Germany, where he grew up with his younger brother Ryouta. He was a brilliant student: after moving up three classes, he finished high school at 15 years old and entered the University of Berlin, earning a PhD at 17 years of age and attracting the attention of many scientific organizations for his unbelievable intelligence. He received many opportunities, but opted to join the Vatican instead.

While he was at University, his mother Ada was diagnosed with cancer and died shortly after, before Hiraga could say goodbye. His brother Ryouta was soon diagnosed with an osteosarcoma as well, and Hiraga works tirelessly for the Vatican, trying to earn enough money for Ryouta's cures.
